The canteen ‘‘Spaudos rūmai’’ is one of the most expensive and remote places which also has the most impressive interior. Besides high quality food and fancy interior, it is a guaranteed treasure for those who are hunting for interesting places. Nothing has changed since the Soviet period in this sixteen-storey building. All the sophisticated details from the 80's still are here, although nowadays they look like decorations of a film set. First of all, do not rely on any signs which lead to the canteen. It turns out that the main entrance is locked, so you will have to cross the yard if you want to have lunch. Afterwards, the white and grimy corridor leads to the massive wooden door - behind which you discover a perfect example of a classic canteen. Well, at least it looks classic with the reference to the interior. Green leatherette and table clothes, luxurious columns, matching decorations of walls and ceilings, dark wooden furniture – these are only few details, which make this canteen so exclusive among the others. I queue up and get surprised once more – it is the first time in my life that I see a male cook in a canteen. As I observe the place and the menu, I decide to challenge this canteen by ordering a Chicken Kiev. In fact, this dish will help making the final evaluation of the place. I settle near the dusty curtains and start tasting my lunch. ‘‘Spaudos rūmai’’ (the office centre for lots of media channels) without a radio – no way! Therefore, here you can hear the best hits of all times coming from the oldie music player. This must be the reason why no sounds of washing-up dishes and talks of other visitors are heard. By the way, it is common to order take away food here, so instead of TV or radio show hosts you will have to sit next to students from the college nearby. Food Menu offers a variety of options, though the prices are quite high. We have tried the Chicken Kiev. It was greatly filled with butter and spices, so the taste was really nice. Moreover, the cutlet was well-fried and covered with a crunchy crust. And last, but not least - it was served with fresh vegetable salads (with radish and sour cream) and a little bit sweet but mild mashed potatoes. The food definitely deserves a high mark. Compote Firstly, the price of compote is quite shocking – 1,5 litas for a glass. However, it is made of red currants, pineapples and other fruits. Therefore, you will have to grab a spoon and eat up all the fruits. The compote is served cold.
