The canteen is located in the old building of VAA, so one should enjoy the beautiful interior: arcs, massive vaults and huge windows. Students who accompanied me on my lunch told that sometimes they feel like in a Harry Potter movie here. I queue up and start choosing my lunch - should it be a stew, or a goulash, or maybe one of steaks? Finally, I decided to get some cold beetroot soup and a chicken roast with paprika. You can also get some buns here - just like in any traditional student canteen. When I approached the cashier I was shocked by an oldskool abacus (counting frame) that the cash-lady was using. I guess nowhere else you might see that kind of device in use. As I sat at the table and observed the crowd, I saw some familiar faces. It turned out that this canteen is also beloved by journalists studying on the other side of the street. While eating I could overhear some conversations not only about upcoming exhibitions or fashion, but also become a witness of students writing all kinds of articles or gossiping. In the canteen there is also a corner bar where the famous barkeeper Elytė is working. She's making great coffee with condensed milk, moreover, she can also discuss about buns diet. There are some bar chairs here for some chit-chat with Elytė. This canteen with its visitors, atmosphere and free exhibitions in the corridors should be beloved by everyone who's interested in arts. Food: The variety of the menu is great. The roast chicken I chose to eat was very good. I recall crispy pieces of paprika very well up to now. Cold beetroot soup was just like anywhere else. Let's say it was so-so. Compote: I got some compote with apples. It was sweet, nevertheless refreshing. On the bottom of your glass you will find apple pieces - enjoy. |
